Book Review – Dirty Little Secrets (SPOILERS)

So in the future on this account I think I’m going to start writing book reviews. I think it will really motivate me to start using wordpress as I basically read an average of 5 to 6 books a week. They usually include a variety as in some will be bad or really good or somewhere in between so I think I’ll have a lot to say about them. I’ll start with a book I read this morning.

I finished a book entitled Dirty Little Secrets by C.J. Omololu just this morning and I would give it 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.

It’s about a teenage girl named Lucy who lives in a dirty, crowded, and unhealthy house with her mother, who is a hoarder. Lucy has never wanted to live in this environment and in the past has tried to reason with her mother and clean the house, but her mother could be classified as emotionally abusive with the way she treats Lucy. She puts her down with her words and then causes Lucy to feel bad about any negative response she shows by acting kind and generous to her.

Lucy is ashamed and terrified to let anyone even near the house. Things start to change the day she is asked out by a boy named Josh. The one thing I really enjoyed about this book was that the romance took a back seat to the real issue. Lucy goes to the movies with Josh and is ecstatic to go to the party he invited her to where his band is playing. But she gets home and she finds her mother dead. I had a lot of issues with the book from there on out. Even though the parts before were mediocre I hoped it was just leading up to something better but I didn’t have much of a reaction to her mother’s death, which isn’t a good sign for me in a book. I feel like I should’ve been shocked at least but I had a blank face the entire time.

Lucy is close to calling 911 when the shame of letting even the police into the house takes over. She comes up with this ridiculous plan to clean the entire house before she calls the police. I feel like this reaction makes sense in the context of how much shame she felt about the state of her living situation but it honestly annoyed me so much. Her emotional reaction to her mother’s death seemed like it took a backseat to the cleaning. AND THEN SHE STILL DECIDES TO GO TO THE PARTY. The party scenes were dull and didn’t keep my attention so I honestly couldn’t tell you what happened except she kissed the boy, as usual.

When she gets home she apparently has this genius plan to set her own house on fire, act like it was a complete accident and shock and like she had never seen her mother’s dead body beforehand AND act like she had been home and in bed for hours.

For me, the writing style in this book didn’t keep my attention and I was not a fan of how a plot that could be interesting, was executed.
